More than 2,500 electronics companies are unveiling new gadgets today at CES, the industry’s largest trade show, and the resounding theme is 3D. Television manufacturers are ready to make a massive push to convince consumers to make the switch as early as this summer to the new format with 3D televisions, channels, players, discs, glasses, video game systems, and computers. Even the show’s largest television, Panasonic’s shocking 152” HDTV, is a 3D television.

RealD 3D glasses

At the very forefront of the push is Sony who, from a special press conference last night, declared “our goal is to become the unprecedented leader in 3D”, something the company plans to achieve with the first series of Bravia 3D LED LCD HDTVs, due to reach Canadian stores this summer. The new televisions, which reach up to 60” in size, will be packaged with RealD 3D glasses and a special transmitter, required to enjoy the 3D effect. Joining the new televisions will be a series of Sony 3D Blu-ray players and new 3D Blu-rays titles. Even Sony’s video game division will be included thanks to a free software update for the PlayStation 3 that will allow it to play 3D video games. Prices for all of these products will be announced closer to launch.

Supporting the new 3D products will be a range of 3D television broadcasts including concerts from Sony Music starting with one by Kenny Chesney, the FIFA 2010 World Cup, PGA Tour, and a number of programs from CBS. Sports channel ESPN has announced an entire channel that will be dedicated to 3D sports programming.

Once a rival to Sony’s Blu-ray format with their own HD-DVD technology, Toshiba surprised the industry by emerging as a major supporter for 3D Blu-ray with their own player and a special “Cell” television that has the ability to convert regular television broadcasts and content into 3D.

For consumers who are unsure about having 3D technology in their home, the choice may not be theirs to make. As more and more details are revealed about the new 3D televisions and players, it’s becoming clear that 3D is being treated as new feature, to be included in all future televisions and Blu-ray players. This summer consumers will have the option to buy a “3D Ready” Sony’s Bravia, meaning that it’s a 3D television, but without a pair of3D glasses or transmitter. The televisions will have the ability to play 3D content, leaving consumers the choice to buy the glasses and transmitter as a kit later. Here’s the details on Sony’s new 3D line:
