This week the Blu-ray industry gathered in Los Angeles for a rare and somewhat soul-searching discussion on the current state of Blu-ray, which despite growing popularity has still to reach mass adoption. The focus was to identify the issues currently keeping Blu-ray from reaching that goal and to explore new innovations and changes, including the introduction of 3D, that might help get the industry there. While I will be posting an article based on that honest and intriguing discussion soon, I offer you this video of one of the day's highlights, the appearance of acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese who participated via satellite from New York in a discussion with Grover Crisp, Senior VP of Sony Film Restoration and Digital Mastering.

In addition to being one of cinema's true Masters, Scorsese is also a passionate film historian who has established several initiatives, including The Film Foundation and The World Cinema Foundation, that lead the charge towards both the restoration of older films as well as the preservation of overlooked works.

Here he discusses the challenges that filmmakers face when they take their films, originally conceived as projected theatrical experiences, and try to duplicate them for home video and how the drive towards formats that offer better quality and expanded features, such as Blu-ray, make that a more satisfying process, both artistically and professionally.

The video below is one I shot on impulse and to deliver it onto YouTube which only allows for ten minute clips, I've had to divide it into three parts.
