It's a nocturnal adventure as a bedtime story. Burton & Isabelle Pipistrelle: Out of the Bat Cave will be the first children's book published by the Royal Ontario Museum. Crafted by their own in-house creative staff the book draws inspiration from the museum's most popular exhibit, the Bat Cave, for a night in the museum tale in which a little bat becomes lost within the halls of the large building and must use the power of echolocation to find his way back home.

The radio-controlled copter craze suffered a bit of turbulence when the market was flooded with cheap imitations, the kind of plastic toys that you bought, flew into a wall, and never played with again. As the toy industry moved on to look for the next trend, Borgfeldt Canada decided to try to fix things. They developed the Litehawk, a copter made with CNC leight weight metal (not plastic), added a gyro-stabilizer, and turned out one of those well-made, crafted toys that are the darlings of hobbyists. The little Canadian copter has done really well and now in another touch of creativity, the company has released a "Flight School" air course you can use to, y'know, actually do something with your copter.

Mattel Video Racer

I've been hearing some lovely tales from parents lately, about how their kids are coming back from the movies with their 3D glasses in their pockets and then playing with them in different ways at home or at school. Some like to simply wear them to look cool, others pop the lenses out and then walk about as if at the very top of today's fashion trends. If this sounds like your kids, 360Kid.com has a fun post where they offer a PDF template you can download to print off and cut out inserts that will turn those glasses into Kermit eyes, lovey hearts, or rock stars.  [More]

Mattel Video Racer

One of those overlooked gems from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, 360kid.com snagged this video report of new Hot Wheels technology coming out later this year. The Mattel Video Racer places a tiny camcorder inside the toy car and an equally tiny view screen in the undercarriage. Press the record button and send the car off and speeding and the camera will record the journey from the driver's point-of-view. You can play the video back on the tiny screen or connect it up to a computer to share with your friends. An accessory will allow you to mount the car on a helmet, bike, or skate board so you can also use it to record your own action adventures. Very cool, should be one of the hot toys for 2011. [More]

Tom Brown Toy Mountain

Tom Brown is an exuberant, ebullient man. I’ve known him for several years, even before his current position as weather anchor, and have never seen him at anything less than full spirit. From personal experience I can tell you that he is always the first to spot if you’re feeling low and can help you find reserves you didn’t know existed. Naturally this makes him the perfect figurehead for Toy Mountain, a charitable drive run by the Salvation Army and supported by CTV’s news team in Toronto. He’s asking for a mountain of 120,000 toys and by golly he’ll make you feel needed for the cause. [More]

She’s part woman, part camera. Barbie Video Girl is a new version of the popular doll with a camcorder built into her body. A small lens points outwards from the centre of her chest and her back has become the mount for a tiny LCD screen. Buttons and a mini-USB port on her spine provide controls and connections while a pair of AAA batteries, strategically housed within her thighs, deliver all the power. She’s a very simple, inexpensive camcorder in a form-factor little girls are very familiar with. She isn’t point-and-shoot, she’s play-and-shoot and the idea is for girls to record Barbie’s adventures and then use creative computer software to bring them to life.

Cuponk

The world is full of drinking games, but none have more voraciously consumed at college and university campuses than Beer Pong. The game is simple - two players try to expertly bounce a ping pong ball into the other’s plastic beer cup. The one who misses has to drink the other’s beer. Since alcohol will impair your motor skills, players spend more time losing and getting drunk than scoring, and so the goal is to try for one of those fluke shots that can turn into legend the next day when rose-tinted memories rise up as the hangovers fade.As you might expect the game has drawn an air of infamy and controversy, partly for encouraging irresponsible drinking, and partly because drinking from a cup loaded with a ball that has touched every surface in the room is, well, unsanitary. Like all forbidden trends, it’s one that has trickled down to high schools where teens are just as eager to prove themselves socially and have come up with their own variations. [More]

Lego Canada Booth

This past weekend the Canadian Toy & Hobby Fair delivered another fun showcase of new toys for the coming year. Sadly I could only spend a few hours at this year's fair, but in appreciation for the enthusiasm and kind comments of LEGO fans from around the world, who visited my blog last year in overwhelming numbers, I made sure to pay a visit to LEGO Canada and this time I photographed every set on display. This year LEGO has shown some wonderful innovation with the introduction of a new series of board games, each made of bricks so they can be "built" to create different board designs. [More]

The thought of a little girl falling asleep with a baby wooly mammoth, an animal that went extinct 10,000 years ago, over the traditional bear or doll really appeals to me. As a society we've reached a better understanding about our impact on the environment around us and programs such as Planet Earth and BBC Life have given use a unique perspective on the true diversity of animals that exist outside of the usual lions, tigers, and bears we know so well. Hansa International is a company that specializes in making realistic plush animals and most specifically, in featuring the exotic species the other companies ignore. 2009 is the first year their products have been made available in Canada and since I first met with them in January, I've watched them make their way into toy stores and science shops across the country.

Fan Expo 2009 Masquerade

The Masquerade is an annual night of cosplay culture at Fan Expo Canada and true to the record numbers the show received during the day, the nighttime celebration attracted so many participants, over seventy performing groups, that it ran over two and a half hours in length. A testimony to the show runners and their hosts, there wasn't a tedious moment and the packed house was still ready for more even as the night drew long. [More]
