Eye of ScienceThe Eye of Science is a photo gallery devoted to a microcosmic world - cristals, viruses, insects, plants and minature technologies are all subjects to the most revealing techniques in photography. Electron microscopy, 1,000x magnification light-based microscopy, X-ray scans and special underwater lens are among the many "eyes" used by founders Oliver Meckes and Nicole Ottawa to create their hauntingly beautiful visions. From the air flow structure of a long-eared owl's feathers to the tiny filtration podocyte cells of the human kidney, each is fascinating glimpse into a world we know little about. [More]

ILM Halloween 2006 PartyPosted on Flickr is a gallery of photos from Industrial Light and Magic's Annual Halloween Party. This year the bash at George Lucas' Special Effects company included Marie Antoinette, cardboard robots and stormtroopers, Monty Python Knights, Borat and Stephen Colbert, a Ladybug family, a walking digital camera that works, and many more. Looks like it was fun. [More]

Today's short film was selected by Colin Trethewey who my Ottawa readers will know as the Technology Reporter for CJOH and host of "TechNow". Colin recently left CTV for a hot job at Weblo.com, one of Canada's biggest Internet start-ups. I'm very jealous and glad he still remembers me. Here's his notes for the movie - "I know Can-AM is doing a pumpkin carving theme these days. It's a pretty traumatic thing to watch especially if you have a soft spot for pumpkins... basically takes you through the horrors of Halloween from a Pumpkin's perspective ;)" Thanks Colin. Directed by Aaron Yonda, the short recently won "Best Horror Short Film" and "Best Concept" at the Chicago Horror Film Festival. Click on "More" to watch a larger version.

Fish HighwayFishighway is an invention that connects two or more aquariums in your home using an aquatic tunnel. The fish have the option of leaving their tank by swimming up through the acrylic tube and then following the water corridor along your ceiling, looking down at your home as they pass until they reach the other end where they can drop into the second tank. Based on an idea originally patented in 1877, the custom-made tunnels work by having all of the air vacuumed out after construction, creating a seal that connects the two tanks. An added pump keeps the water flowing and filters keep it clean. On the website you'll find photos of several in existence, construction drawings, and a link to purchase a book with all the details on how to buld your own. [More]

Jacob’s LadderI recently spent a day with Canadian Special F/X artist James “Jimmy Claws” Gawley who related to me his work on the cult horror movie “Jacob’s Ladder”. One of the haunting images from that film involves people with rapidly moving, faceless heads, a trick he achieved through a mechanical prop called “Vibro-Man”. Jacob’s Ladder remains a unique horror film, one that deals with a state of mind, where the nightmare involves psychological demons instead of supernatural ones and a loss of control at the hands of the government rather than a killer in the woods. It’s human madness portrayed with visions that, in 1990, were experimental and new in cinema [More]

Canada AM Halloween DogsMake sure to check out Canada AM's Halloween Pets Gallery. Jeff Hutchenson recently asked out viewers for pictures of their pets dressed up and the results that came in are very funny. I love the look of the German Shepherd as Harry Potter. [More]

Butterscotch the PonyA life-sized toy pony for girls leads this year’s wave of animatronic and robotic toy pets. The rapidly growing trend towards robotic toy companions for kids means this year’s selection is so large, I can’t cover them all on Canada AM. Larger, creepier, cuddlier, more interactive, and each is just a small glimpse as to what the future holds [More]

Hungry SpidersYou've just baked a cake and have left it on a window sill to cool. Suddenly, spiders, hungry spiders! descend from the ceiling, slinking down on their webs to get it. You must protect you cake. They are small, hard to see, so use your mouse to guide a magnifying glass to find them. Once you have one in view, click to smush it. [More]
